Some home décor fashions stay the same and while others have changed over time. When it comes to towels and washcloths there are very few breakthroughs – a good cotton washcloth remains the gold standard even in the face of modern microfibers and the best towels are still 100% cotton. On the other hand, the bedroom has changed dramatically in the last few decades.
The choice between comforters and bedspreads has changed the landscape of bedroom décor. Back in the day a well-made bed featured a carefully smoothed bedspread pulled snugly over two pillows at the head of the bed with perhaps a blanket neatly folded at the foot of the bed. A teen’s bedroom might feature a novelty pillow such as an autograph hound or a satiny toss pillow while an adult’s bedroom was relatively austere. One might visit an elderly parent and still see a bedroom much as described above but that is not reflective of most modern bedroom décor.
Today’s bedding begins with a bed skirt topped by a comforter or quilt. Two pillows in decorative shams rest against the headboard – this combination is commonly referred to as a comforter set or quilt set and they consist of the components described above. Most quilt or comforter sets do not match precisely, in fact they are far more likely to feature prints, patterns and colors which coordinate and complement one another since the eclectic look is now popular in home décor. Years ago the concept of mixing and matching would have been considered outlandish while today it is the norm.
